NEW games area in Herdings Park
20th July 2010
Local children celebrated their new games area at Herdings Park last weekend.
Young people in the area were actively involved in the design and look of the multi-use games area (MUGA) at Herdings Park. Local people had asked for more facilities for teenagers in the area, including all-weather facilities for football, tennis and cricket.
It is part of the ongoing improvement planned in Herdings Park in association with the Friends of Herdings Park and the Herdings Park Bowling Club. The Park will soon be getting more play equipment as part of the city wide ‘Play Project’funded by Play Builder and Sheffield’s Let’s Change4Life. The Play Project provides challenging play for 8 to 13 year olds.
Last year Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet approved the injection of around £2 million into 23 play spaces across the city over a two year period. The City Council has been closely working with NHS Sheffield as part of the Let’s Change4Life programme to create a new generation of playgrounds that offer young people a challenge, helping them to get fit while providing fun and in more natural surroundings.
The games area will be officially opened by Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, the Council’s Cabinet member for Communities at the Valley International Festival on Saturday (3 July).
Councillor Mohammed said: “We have been working closely with local community groups and young people for a number of years on ideas to improve the park. I am really pleased to see the games area finally up and running and being so well used by local young people.”
The Valley International Festival will be packed with World Cup fun to celebrate the Gleadless Valley’s diverse cultures, with food, sports, street dance, drumming, cheerleading and fun for all the family. It’s open from 11am until 3pm and admission is free to get into the Festival.
