Christmas Holidays
22nd December 2010
it’s all pretty quiet on the Bike It front with schools being out for their Christmas holidays and even people in the offices disappearing for their Christmas breaks too.
Bit of a quiet end of term too with lots of activities being cancelled because of the weather, but never fear, there are lots of exciting activities and events planned for next term.
In this weather it can be easy to leave the bike in the shed, but a lot of the time its just about getting a few things sorted before you head out. So here are a few tips to help you through the winter
- Wrap up warm, lots of layers are good as you will heat up quickly
- Wear a thin hat or buff under your helmet
- Invest in a good pair of gloves – They will last for ages and you will not regret it
- Get some good thick socks, but make sure they don’t make your shoes feel to tight as this could stop the blood circulating as well
- Dress nice and bright- some days recently it has seemed like twilight all day
- Put lights on your bike, body and even helmet, it all helps, if you think it looks a bit dull, stick them on. Also while you are at it don’t forget to check the batteries, it might look good when you put it on your bike but it could be dim a minute later
- Keep your bike well maintained
- Avoid riding right in the edge of the road (you should really be at least a metre out from the edge at any time of year) as there is more slippy mud and black ice on these bits of the road
- Take a bit more time over your journey
- In the end you don’t have to prove your worth by cycling every day, you might be wrapped up and raring to go, but black ice is tricky to see and ice and snow are slippery – don’t forget its not just you who has to deal with it, other road users will be slipping around too! They might also be distracted more by the conditions
Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year
