A Growing Number of Schools

31st January 2011

I was delighted to be able to attend one of the workshops delivered by the Royal Horticultural Society at Portercroft Primary School on Friday last week.  These workshops have been funded by Sheffield Let’s Change for Life and have been running throughout the Autumn, Spring and Summer term.  Schools have been able to attend all 3 workshops in the series so that they get information about the whole growing year.

There were 8 schools attending and we were all totally engaged for the whole day.  Topics covered were: composting (including wormeries), digging and preparing the soil, sewing and pricking out and links to the curriculum.  We were all delighted to come home with a goody bag filled with seeds and pots and trays and seed potatoes and catologues as well as other information.

Louise Cox, the trainer from the RHS, was extremely knowledgable and the session was brought alive with demonstrations, illustrations and a whole load of equipment.  I would thoroughly recommend anyone that has the smallest interest in getting involved with gardening/growing in schools attends a workshop.  You will come back inspired and itching to get out in the garden (however cold it is).  My husband is very impressed by my increased knowledge and he is hoping for a much improved crop of leeks this year.

There are places available on all of the remaining workshops.  Have a look at the information sheet and fill in the booking sheet if you are interested in attending.  Oh and I forgot to say that the workshops are completely FREE!!!!!!!!!!
