Family Community Garden

4th February 2011

An opportunity is now available for families and young people to grow their own fruit and vegetables

A new exciting initiative that aims to engage and encourage families to grow their own food and improve their health and well-being is being developed in Sheffield.

This new facility will be created in Parson Cross Park, North Sheffield, and it is tailored to meet the needs of families and young people. Most importantly  it will provide a safe, inclusive, environment in which to gain new skills.

The new community garden will have storage facilities, a shared learning space, plots of various sizes with some suitable for beginners and others for more ambitious learners, a demonstration garden and seating area, tool storage and a poly tunnel.  For families and young people who would like advice to get started help will be on hand, provided by a Parks and Countryside ranger and Sheffield Wildlife Trust.

Plans have been developed and the site will be ready for use this growing season. People taking part in the project and being active will benefit from increased physical activity and improved fitness. They will grow and eat healthy food, straight from earth to plate – a climate friendly option.

This project is funded by Sheffield-Lets Change4Life, a city-wide programme focused on addressing overweight and obesity in children and families. This project will contribute to the Sheffield Let’s Change 4 Life aims of helping families eat well, move more and live longer.

  1. Hello! I’m one of a group of local residents and schools who are setting up a community garden within Ecclesfield Park. We’re interested in making links with other local-ish groups doing something similar. It would be useful to talk with you or visit your site as we are bound to have questions that you’ve already had to consider. We’d like to learn from lots of other projects.

    Is this possible?
