Sheffield launch new Doula Project
9th August 2011
Sheffield City Council have teamed up with the Hull Goodwin Development Trust to replicate their successful Volunteer Doula Project supporting vulnerable expectant mums and Families through the last 6 weeks of pregnancy, at birth (if required) and 6 weeks post-natally.
Volunteer Doulas have the chance to gain OCN accreditation through a structured training programme to become a Volunteer Doula. Training will be undertaken in all aspects of care including the role of the Volunteer Doula, active birth, breastfeeding, safeguarding and confidentiality to allow the Volunteer Doula to give support to the women through their pregnancy, birth and beyond.
Up to 9 credits can be gained on completion of the Open College Network accredited training which can be used towards further studies in Healthcare, Midwifery or similar.
The Volunteer Doula will be expected to commit to being able to attend all training sessions over
an 8 week programme, made up of twelve sessions including homework which will then be followed by a short oral test. The expectation will be that qualified Doula’s will support at least 4 mum’s and have the flexibility to be available at any time of day or night to give support as needed to mum.
