I was wondering if the Change4Life programme is able to deliver workshops directly to people from the community?
I am a community development worker for sheffield PCT. My role is to Deliver Race Equality In Mental Health For BME communities. At the moment I am working with a group of Refugee women who have asked for health eating workshops as they feel they want to ensure that their families are eating healthy.
Am not sure how your programme can support this it would be useful to know what work you are able to carry out with communities.
Kindest regards

I read with interest the leaflet which appeared in my childs school bag.Under the healthy schools section it said that you are helping schools to encourage children to take a healthy lunchbox, which my child does. This project needs to emphasise to schools that they play a large part in the nurturing and encouragement of children to eat from this box. My child returns home every day with the fruit still in his box, largely because he cant wait to get back outside to play!! He always used to eat a piece of fruit at the schools nursery because it was eaten at carpet time, at school a box of fruit is placed outside at playtime and the onus is on the child to pick something from it. Again my child rarely eats anything because his playtime agenda is about running around with his friends playing games. So the ‘partnership between parent and school seems rather one sided with the pressure to get the 5 pieces of fruit and veg eaten around school time and not within it!!Teachers need to realise that they are in ‘loco parentis’ when our children are at school and take on the role of the nurturer around food, school should be a holistic experience and not just an academic one. The goverment targets of free fruit for all are not being met at my school because it is too ad hoc, how do they monitor whether children from the poorer and low income families are accessing this free entitlement and not the yummy mummies all taking the bunches of bananas left at the school gate for all to take at the end of the school day!!!
Comment in response to the comment about fruit in schools and lunch boxes.
Thank you for your comments and interest in healthy eating/fruit in schools. Many of our schools are working hard to develop healthy lunch box guidance/information and we would always encourage schools to involve children and their parents/carers in this process. This not only helps to build positive relationships with familes but also means that the whole school approach model is followed.
By taking a whole school approach to healthy eating schools
can promote consistent messages about diet and healthy eating and encourage children to choose healthy options and try new foods. This includes working with everyone in school from the Lunch Time Supervisors in the dining room to the Teachers delivering lessons in the classroom.
Your point about schools taking responsibility for children’s health and well-being alongside their educational attainment is an important one. 85% of our Schools in Sheffield have National Healthy Schools Status which demonstrates their commitment to this important agenda.
Hello, I entertain with vegetables (and sometimes fruit) and have developed several shows/activities that engage children and adults in thinking about healthy eating and local food, including “Lois Leek and Peter Parsnip combat Artificial Cheese-beast”.
Would love to hear from you if i can help with the Sheffield campaign
Yours, Madame Zucchini (aka Natalie Hunt)
