The Great Outdoors

Creating safe, healthy, accessible open spaces for children and families to enjoy
Play Across Sheffield
A new generation of playgrounds are being installed across the city which are designed to allow children to play in more natural surroundings and learn how to judge risks for themselves in a safe environment. Twenty-three sites across Sheffield will have new or improved playgrounds by 2012. The equipment has been designed to give children and families the opportunity to let off steam and have fun while becoming fitter.
Green Space for Health
This project aims to engage families in improving their health through growing their own food. A new facility will be created on a disused allotment, which is tailored to meeting the needs of families and young people and which will provide a safe, inclusive, environment in which they can gain new skills.
It is planned that the new community garden will be comprised of storage facilities, toilet and baby changing, a shared learning space and plots of various sizes- suitable for beginners and more ambitious learners. Families will be targeted who are at risk of diet related health problems. Training and support will be provided to engage and encourage families.
A key element of this will be training and support for those new to growing their own food.
This project will impact on levels of physical activity and increase the amount of locally growth fruit and vegetables consumed within the City. The long term aim will be to create a site that is accessible, secure and family friendly.
