Sheffield Food Plan

The food plan is an ambitious action plan to improve different elements of food across Sheffield focusing on health, the economy and the environment. There are obvious benefits for health professionals in terms of improving diets and ensuring food is safe to eat, and this will go some way to addressing health inequalities in Sheffield. Professionals working in the environmental sustainability sector will also have an interest in the plan as it aims to address the environmental impact of the production and consumption of food. Professionals working in the local food economy will also have a part to play, with the plan looking at concerns about food security as well as a desire to celebrate the food produced and consumed in Sheffield.

Food Festival

The first Sheffield Food Festival was held from the 1 – 6 June.  The event was a massive success, with an estimated 20,000 visitors in the city centre during the week.

The principles behind the Festival reflected those of the forthcoming Sheffield Food Plan – to celebrate and showcase Sheffield’s food producers whilst also promoting health and environmental sustainability issues surrounding food.

Some of the events at the Festival included:

  • A local food producers market
  • Restaurants stalls
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • A ‘Grow Your Own Zone’
  • A ‘Kid’s Zone’
  • Special events occurring across restaurants in Sheffield

The Sheffield Food Festival was a city wide celebration with events going on in different communities.  These included a ‘Barbecue in the Park’ at Parson Cross, ‘Picnic in the Park’ at Endcliffe Park, promoting community allotments in the east of the city and a successful Guinness World Record attempt for the fastest ice-cream ever made!

Feedback on the Festival has been very positive with 93% of people questioned saying they had a positive experience and 99% of people saying they would like another Food Festival next year.  Furthermore, 32% of people questioned had heard about the Food Plan, suggesting that the Food Festival has been successful in promoting the Food Plan principles.

Sheffield Let’s Change4Life was a key partner in the Food Festival, with a ‘100 Calorie Shop’. promoting the new Healthy Choices Loyalty Card, and consultation with approximately 400 children on the Sheffield Food Plan.
