Healthy Urban Planner
Information for businesses

Issues that typically concern planners, such as the quality and location of housing, opportunities to walk and cycle to local services and having good quality open spaces in our neighbourhoods are all recognised as being wider determinants of health and well being. If people in Sheffield are to have the opportunity to enjoy healthier lifestyles, it’s crucial that planning policies address these issues.

In Sheffield, we’re in the process of drafting new planning policies to form the Sheffield Development Framework (SDF), so there’s a unique opportunity to make sure that new planning policies promote development that provides opportunities for improved health.

The SDF will be a collection of planning documents, from the strategic Core Strategy, to more local Area Action Plans and Masterplans.

The Core Strategy was adopted in March 2009 and can be accessed on the Sheffield City Council website.

We’re now working on the next policy document; the City Policies and Sites document. The document will contain more detailed policies around urban design, transport and the environment in particular.

Consultation on the draft document will be Spring/Summer 2010.

Further detail about the SDF can be found on the Sheffield City Council website.
