Food Glorious Food
Information for parents and families
The smell of bacon frying in the morning. The first knobbly, mud-covered veggies from your very own garden. Curry, eaten in front of the telly. Sunday roasts with Grandma’s gravy. Cleansing greens and heart-warming soups…
Food – how we grow it, prepare it and eat it – is at the very heart of our culture. What we eat, when, why and who we share it with, reflects who we are and forms a large part of our daily lives.
Food Glorious Food is a family-friendly exhibition which tells the stories that lie behind what we choose to eat. Drawing on the vast national oral history archive through our partners the University of Sheffield, along with the collections of Museums Sheffield and the V&A, Food Glorious Food takes a trip down memory lane and looks at the last 50 years of British food culture. From the austerity of rationing, through the post-war explosion of choice, to the present awareness of healthy eating and production methods, food has always reflected the concerns of the age.
Budding cooks of all ages will enjoy our eclectic displays of labour saving gadgets, historic culinary devices and unusual recipes, before delving into our larder, stocked with interesting food stories and nostalgic packaging. Little green fingers will be kept busy in our vegetable patch play area, while our special ‘food phones’ will allow visitors to listen to and share their own food likes, dislikes and memories. Foodies of all ages will find plenty of exhibition-related goodies in both our café and shop.
The exhibition runs from 20th March to 28th November 2010. See the Museums Sheffield website to find out more.
