What is the Sheffield Family Community Garden?

The Sheffield Family Community Garden aims to engage families in improving their health through growing their own food. A new facility is being created in Parson Cross Park, tailored to meeting the needs of families and young people and to provide a safe, inclusive, environment in which to gain new skills.

The new community garden will be comprised of storage facilities, a shared learning space; plots of various sizes- suitable for beginners and more ambitious learners; a demonstration garden and seating area; and a poly tunnel. A part time ranger post is available to provide help and advice to get families started.

People taking part in the project will benefit from increased physical activity and improved fitness. They will grow and eat new healthy foods, straight from earth to plate- a climate friendly option.

This project is funded by Sheffield Lets Change 4 Life, a city wide programme focused on addressing overweight and obesity in children and families. This project will contribute to the Sheffield Let’s Change 4 Life aims of helping families eat well, move more and live longer.”

Why take up this opportunity?

Families taking part in the project will get:

  • The chance to influence the design of the new Family Garden to be created.
  • A space of their own to grow fruit and vegetables, from small raised beds to bigger areas.
  • The chance to spend time with your family in the fresh air learning new skills and getting your own home grown food to enjoy at the end of it.
  • Support and training to see you through from preparing the ground, sowing and planting your crop, to storing and cooking your fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • To have fun and try new things!
