Better Streets
Information for parents & families

Street AuditOur streets are the one public space we all use, everyday. With your help, we hope to ensure Sheffield has better streets that we all want to use (walk cycle, play) in order to make us healthier, happier and more sociable.

First though we have to look at the current situation and figure out why we are not using the streets. Areas where street audits will take place are Darnall, Manor Castle, Southey Owlerton (Foxhill), Lowedges, Jordanthorpe/Batemoor, Upperthorpe/Netherthorpe, Highgreen, Arbourthorne and Norfolk Park

The audit involves inviting 10 members of the local community to look around their local area using maps and identifying barriers such as holes in pavements, rubbish, poor lighting and street signage. The group are then encouraged to plan and deliver an audit in their community and prepare a report.

This work will be carried out by Living Streets and takes the form of a practical training session which provides an introduction to Community Street Audits and provides hands on training in conducting audits and developing solutions with partners by taking a community development approach.

Living Streets were chosen and commissioned to carry out this work as they take a community development approach which ensures any problems identified in an area are identified by local people and not professionals.

We want to work with you to make the streets you live, work, shop and play in, safe, attractive and enjoyable spaces.

In some areas the local community have looked around their local areas and identified what might stop them using the streets near to them. They have asked us to fix holes in pavements, clear up rubbish, light streets better and and improve street signs. We will do all this and more and then ask people again if these changes have encouraged them to walk, cycle and play outside more near where they live.

Got any bright ideas – let us know.
